MUSICAL COMPETENCIES

Explore the styles I specialize in – from classical precision to modern grooves.

Classical Bass

The shared experience of listening, responding, and making music within an ensemble is, to him, a special form of musical communication. He considers it a great privilege to engage in a living dialogue with the works of the great composers of the past in this way.

Jazz Bass

Julian Glaner particularly values the interplay in jazz, where rhythmic elements like swing and polyrhythms take center stage. The engagement with improvisation and the flexibility within musical structures allow him to develop new musical ideas while shaping the dynamics and flow of a piece. The precise listening and adaptation to musical details in jazz give him the space to shape harmonic and rhythmic nuances both as a soloist and within an ensemble.

Pop Bass

In pop music, Julian Glaner focuses on tight timing, catchy lines, and solid support. His playing adds energy and character to each song—whether on stage or in the studio, he aims to enhance the groove and feel of every track.

VITA

Julian Glaner, born in Hamburg in 2000, is a versatile and dedicated musician whose musical journey began at an early age and has since evolved with great consistency. From a young age, his enthusiasm for music was evident, and he has pursued it with unwavering commitment ever since.

His musical path began at the State Youth Music School in Hamburg, where he studied under Michael Koslov from 2006 to 2013. At the same time, he was an active member of the „Neuer Knabenchor Hamburg“ (New Boys’ Choir of Hamburg) from 2003 to 2010, gaining formative ensemble and concert experience early on.

Julian Glaner developed a deep passion for both classical music and jazz early in life—two genres he continues to pursue and enjoy with equal dedication. This openness to musical styles shapes both his playing and artistic choices.

Between 2010 and 2013, he received multiple awards in the German national music competition Jugend musiziert—an early testament to his talent and dedication.

From 2013 to 2016, he continued his double bass training at the Hamburg Conservatory, receiving key artistic impulses from Stefan Schäfer and Richard Welschhoff.

A major milestone in his artistic development was his time at the Wellington Secondary Jazz Academy in Nanaimo, Canada (2016–2017). This stay laid the foundation for his jazz education and played a decisive role in shaping his stylistic direction. Particularly influential was his teacher Carmella Luvisotto, whose intensive mentorship helped him deepen his understanding of jazz, develop his personal expression, and refine his skills in ensemble playing and improvisation.

During this time, Julian Glaner was honored with three awards at the prestigious Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Idaho, USA, in 2017—an international success that powerfully demonstrated his musical maturity.

From 2018 to 2020, he studied under Omar Rodriguez Calvo (Tingvall Trio), an internationally renowned jazz bassist who significantly influenced his playing and musical expressiveness.

In 2020, Julian Glaner completed his music-focused high school diploma at the Julius-Leber-Schule in Hamburg. That same year, he began his studies in jazz double bass at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, where he has been receiving instruction from renowned artists such as Prof. Lucas Lindholm, Prof. Wolf Kerschek, and Jonathan Ihlenfeld Cuñado.

Lucas Lindholm, known for his collaborations with international jazz greats and his influence on generations of musicians, had a particularly profound impact on Glaner. Under Lindholm’s guidance, he not only developed technical proficiency but also a deep understanding of musical expression and improvisation. This mentorship helped Glaner further refine his own musical voice and provided him with a strong foundation in jazz performance.

In 2025, Julian Glaner was awarded a full scholarship by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to support his continued studies in Latin American music. As part of this scholarship, he traveled to the Dominican Republic, where he deepened his knowledge and practical experience in the region’s diverse musical traditions.

Julian Glaner is active in both classical orchestras and the jazz scene throughout Germany. He regularly performs with various orchestras and jazz ensembles of diverse configurations. His playing is characterized by stylistic versatility, musical sensitivity, and strong stage presence.

Music has allowed Julian Glaner to travel the world from an early age. Concert tours have taken him to China, Poland, Italy, Turkey, Switzerland, Bulgaria, and many other international venues—experiences that have broadened and enriched his artistic perspective.

Through his ongoing dedication, stylistic openness, and thorough training in both classical and contemporary traditions, Julian Glaner has established himself as a promising young musician within the German music scene.
